If you’re struggling with poor NBN, you may be eligible for a free upgrade to a faster, more reliable connection.
In December 2024, over four million premises on Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connections became eligible to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).
So far just over 590,000 homes and businesses have taken advantage of NBN Co’s free upgrades, which sits around a measly 15 per cent.

FTTP is one of the only two technology types that also can access faster speed tiers. Those on an FTTP connection can get NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans.
As the names might suggest, these can reach download speeds of 250Mbps and 1000Mbps, respectively.
By comparison, FTTN connections struggle to reach speeds above that of an NBN 50 plan, which maxes out at 50Mbps. So you’re looking at between five and 20 times the speed just by upgrading.

FTTN is notoriously considered the worst NBN connection type, because of the amount of copper used, while FTTP is regarded as the best. This is due to its capability to reach higher speed and greater reliability.

Then to qualify for an upgrade, a customer simply needs to order an NBN 100 plan or faster from a participating NBN provider. Keep in mind an NBN 100 may also only be a few dollars more per month than NBN 50 but the speeds will be noticeably better.
