A manhunt is under way in NSW after two men escaped from a prison in Broken Hill overnight

A manhunt is under way after two inmates escaped from a prison in the remote town of Broken Hill overnight.

NSW Police released a statement on Monday revealing the two men – aged 23 and 28 – had escaped form the Broken Hill Correctional Centre.

The younger of the two men was subsequently arrested, along with a 31-year-old woman who was in his company.

But the second escapee is yet to be found, and police are launching a public appeal for information about his whereabouts.

“Isaiah Johnson, aged 28, was last seen at the facility about 9.40 pm yesterday (Sunday 9 March 2025),” NSW Police said in a statement.

“It’s believed he left the facility on Gossan Street with another man who has since been arrested.”

Johnson is described as a man of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, with a thin build, 160cm tall, with black hair, black beard and moustache.

The correctional centre is a both a minimum and medium security prison located half an hour drive from the NSW – South Australian border, with the closest major city being Adelaide, 516 km to the south west.

“Anyone who sees Isaiah is urged not to approach him but to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately,” NSW Police said.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
