Tempers flare as Japanese man starts screaming match with Aussie woman for smoking at snowfields

Footage has emerged of a Japanese man going off at an Australian woman for smoking a cigarette at a snowfield, causing tempers to flare.

The clip, filmed on a GoPro, showed a Japanese man approaching an Australian couple enjoying a trip to the slopes.

The woman was seen with a cigarette and a can of drink at the resort.

The local told the couple “don’t smoke, it’s not polite”.

The Aussie woman replied with “sorry”.

“Sorry? What sorry?!” the man then screams.

The woman reacted ferociously, yelling back, “I beg your pardon! I did not know! Don’t yell!”

The Australian man next to her then steps in, telling the local, “don’t yell at her, she didn’t know”.

“Didn’t know?!” the Japanese man exclaims.

“No, it’s her first time,” the Australian tourist replies.

The snowboarder then calls the couple “a**holes” as he walks off, prompting the woman to mutter “f**king crazy, man”.

Her remarks set off the snowboarder who screamed, “what?! what?!”.

The Aussie man then stepped in again warning: “You’re going to touch her I’ll knock you out. You don’t talk to women like that”.

“You don’t smoke,” the Japanese man insisted.

“Yeah you don’t talk to women like that either, mate,” the Australian replied.

“A**holes,” the snowboarder repeated as he walked off, concluding the heated argument.

Many people have since reacted to the viral video, which has reached over 14 million views on X.

“Glad some Japanese people are getting fed up with these low quality tourists,” one said.

“Dude was fuming, but tourists got to respect the rules, ya know?” another said.

“As an Australian who’s lived in Japan for years, the locals get pretty sick of our s**t when we break rules and act rudely,” a third said on Reddit.

However, some people sided with the Australian pair saying it was an over reaction from the Japanese man.

“This Aussie man is a hero. Polite and stood up for his wife. Good for him. If you want people to follow the rules, ask politely,” one said on X.

“Aussies were in the wrong for smoking. But the Japanese guy went the wrong way about it. Aussie guy handled it well by not raising his temper. Life too short to get p*ssed off over something like this,” another added on Reddit.

Smoking is banned across many public spaces in Japan and is generally frowned upon outdoors.

Indoor smoking is more common, with some locations offering public designated smoking areas.
